Kang Doo awakens from a coma lasting over three months following an unexpected accident. He spends three years in the hospital undergoing rehabilitation, dealing with his shattered right leg. Kang Doo's mother also becomes ill during this time. Even though Kang Doo feels sorry for his weakening mother and devotes himself to rehabilitation, his mother collapses around the time he can finally stand on his own again. Burdened with the debts from the hospital bills, Kang Doo drifts into the backstreets, willing to do any work for money. Then, he meets Moon Soo. Moon Soo has been diligently working and smiling more to care for her mother. Feeling grateful for surviving, she tries to live inconspicuously without desiring more from life. Although she wishes to date someone without pain, she finds herself drawn to Kang Doo, whose wounds deeply resemble her own. Strangely, in front of Kang Doo, she can express her emotions fully.
